7 Best Pizza Cutter Wheels For 2021
You’re looking for the best pizza cutter. They pretty much have a single-use—cutting pizza—and it’s not like you’re going to use one every day, unless you’re eating pizza every day, in which case, strong play, but you might want to visit your doctor.
Still, they’re necessary. For cutting pizza! (And, okay, fine, for cutting pie dough and homemade pasta.) Instead of settling on the first one, you see at the grocery store, set your sights on the best. Since the only thing worse than a crowded kitchen drawer is one full of cheap and broken tools, we tested 13 pizza cutters and came away with an absolute favorite for slicing pizza.
Whether you like your pizza frozen, homemade, or delivered, a good pizza cutter is a must to keep toppings in place and to eat pizza like a normal human being: by the slice. Sure, there are ultra-efficient hungry people out there who — like my giant (6 foot 5 inch) teenage son — just fold the pizza in half and eat it taco style. For the rest of us, we want a tool that can slice the pie into manageable portions. Fortunately, there are several excellent options available.
The two main types of pizza cutters are wheels and rockers. Pizza wheels are what you commonly find in most American homes. They usually consist of a sharp blade wheel that is attached to a long handle. However, direct-grip pizza wheels are becoming more popular. They don’t have a long handle. Instead, the wheel has a cover that you grip it by. This can give some users more leverage than the long-handled wheel, but it’s also harder to see where you are cutting since the cover and your hand may obstruct your vision. A direct-grip wheel tops our list.
Also called a mezzanine, which is Italian for “half-moon,” rocker cutters are what you typically find in a commercial kitchen. These have a long, curved blade that you “rock” across the pizza to cut it in half. Rockers are efficient, easy to clean, and toppings are less likely to stick to the blade and end up where you don’t want them. Yet, since the blades are generally 14 inches or longer, rockers tend to take up a lot of drawer space.
Scissor-style and pie server-shaped cutters are less common but growing in popularity. We didn’t include any of these in our guide because they require you to make a series of shorter cuts in order to slice your pizza, and we found this to be inefficient compared to wheels and rockers.
Many pizza cutters advertise that they are dishwasher safe. However, like other cutlery, we strongly recommend washing your pizza cutter by hand. This is because the banging around during the wash cycle can dull the knife and dishwasher detergent is incredibly abrasive.
While researching the best pizza cutters, we read through hundreds of expert and buyer reviews and ratings of dozens of models. Our guide features cutters that seamlessly cut through several types of pizza, are durable, and clean up easily.
Types of Pizza Cutters
- Wheeled Cutters: Most likely, this is what you picture when you think of pizza cutters. The thin sharp wheel can either be mounted on an axle or encased in a handle. Pizza cutter wheels offer maximum control over how you slice your pizza. Plus, they take up little space in a kitchen drawer.
- Mezzaluna/Rocking Blade Cutters: These cutters feature a large, half-moon-shaped slicing knife with handles on both ends. As the name suggests, the knife is rocked back and forth to slice the pizza from one end to the other. It’s probably the quickest way to cut a whole pizza all the way across. The only downside is, it can be awkward and bulky to store.
- Scissors: This method puts the meaning behind the phrase, don’t knock it ’till you try it. Because scissors come at the pizza from both sides, there’s no pizza task they can’t take on. They can be a little tricky to clean, but luckily most of the time they’re dishwasher safe.

When it comes to choosing a pizza-cutter style, you’ve got options. For all practical purposes, handheld wheels offer everything a traditionally handled wheel can but in a more home kitchen-friendly package. Handheld wheels are smaller, so they’re easier to store, plus they’re designed to fit right in the palm of your hand, which many argue lends more power and control. If that appeals to you, and you’ve got a thing for safety, you can’t beat our $ pick, the Kitchy Pizza Cutter Wheel.
Before we dive in, a forewarning: As much as we love this thing, its price does tend to fluctuate, ranging from as low as $12 all the way up to $20. If you get caught with surge pricing (or the Kitchy happens to be out of stock) and need a cutter pronto, our runner-up in this price category, the Zyliss Pizza Cutter ($12), will serve you right.
It is comparable in form and function but lacks the safety features of the Kitchy. Our testers found the blade similar, though it was more difficult to take apart for cleaning. You’ll want to check out both cutters before you buy, but know that Kitchy’s is worth the wait. Now back to the Kitchy and why it’s so dang good.
As with most handheld options, this cutter features a sharp bladed wheel housed under a plastic hood, which serves as your grip while cutting. In comparison to a traditional pizza cutter with a handle, the ergonomics here are slightly different:
The hand goes over the blade, and the downward force is applied directly over the pizza. While the question of which style is better comes down to personal preference, some folks, including Alton Brown, prefer the handle-free design because it gives the user more control, and we tend to agree.
Out of all the handheld cutters we tested, Kitchy’s was the most comfortable. A number of testers commented on the soft rubber where their hands met the plastic, which made for a better grip with no slippage.
During our testing phase (pizza party!), our panel cut across crust and toppings — bell pepper, sausage, and basil pies, plus a few Sicilian cheese pizzas, if you’re wondering — with zero blade wobble. The same cannot be said about any of the budget-priced handled pizza wheels we tried.
While the Kitchy slices through traditional round cheese pizzas with ease, and even the thick crust of a Sicilian pie, we can’t say it was perfect for thicker-crust pizzas with more than two or three toppings. The entire slicer itself is 5” in diameter, but because the plastic handle covers about half of the circular blade, it resulted in dragging some toppings — but not so much that it was a dealbreaker.
If you’re a toppings lover, we recommend you look at our $$ winner, a traditional, restaurant-grade pizza wheel. We should note that the Kitchy did an excellent job cutting through other eats like quesadillas and frittatas, and even blocks of fudge. It’s a convenient tool for cutting sandwiches into smaller pieces, which is perfect for children (or your next afternoon tea party).
Speaking of little ones: The plastic guard makes the Kitchy a great choice for households with kids — or accident-prone adults. The coverslips over the blade so you don’t have to worry about nicking your fingers when reaching into your cutlery drawer during the frenzy of a pizza party.
The Kitchy is also dishwasher-safe, though if you choose to go the manual route, the plastic handle opens like a clamshell and the blade pops out entirely. It wasn’t easy enough for a child to do, but neither was popping open any of the other handheld wheels. So leave the cleanup to the adults.
For our homemade pies, we love the Kitchy because it’s sharp, dependable, and won’t take up too much room in the kitchen. Add that it’s easy to clean and it comes out of the box with a plastic guard, and you’ve got a pizza cutter the whole family can get down with.

For the home chef who fantasizes about opening their own pizzeria, there’s the Dexter-Russell Sani-Safe Pizza Cutter. If this pizza wheel looks exactly like something a cook might use to slice up hundreds of pies for a line of hungry customers, it’s because it is. Dexter-Russell has been in the commercial cutlery business since 1818, so they know a thing or two about building quality blades that hold up against frequent use.
This classic pizza cutter works exactly how you imagine it would: Grip the handle and roll the wheel across the pie for a clean slice. The wheel’s size and sharpness make easy work of both thin-crust and deep-dish pies, cleanly cutting through toppings and cheese. When compared with one of the most popular classic cutters on the market, America’s Test Kitchen-approved Oxo Good Grips Pizza Wheel, the Dexter-Russell feels lighter, more nimble, and generally easier to use, even though it’s the same size.
Our testers loved the handle, which is white polypropylene with a faux wood-grain texture to reduce slippage. Its thumb guard makes exerting the effort needed to slice easy and safe. Since this tool is constructed to withstand the high heat of commercial kitchens, you won’t have to worry about the handle if left too close to the stove.
It looks more industrial than some of the other handled pizza wheels we tested, which included the aforementioned Oxo Good Grips, plus options from KitchenAid and Utopia Kitchen. Simply put: Those handles felt poorly constructed in favor of style. The Dexter-Russell has nothing to prove except its ability to turn you into a pizzaiolo.
If there’s anything to take away here, it’s that this tool is sharp. Like, very sharp. And it doesn’t have a cover, so you’ll want to be mindful of its placement in a cutlery drawer. The precision-ground high-carbon steel blade is 4” across, which makes it bigger than some of the other pizza cutters of this style; and the manufacturer sells replacement blades. Commercial kitchens that have reviewed the blade report that it stays sharp for years, even with daily use, so it should last even longer in your home kitchen.
The blade is described as stain-free, not stainless, and some reviews do mention rust appearing after using a dishwasher to clean it — though it can also easily be washed by hand. That’s the trade-off with any high-carbon steel blade: They tend to keep their sharp edge for much longer than typical stainless steel, but they have a poor rust resilience. Point is, if you take care of it, your Dexter-Russell will last for a very long time.
This thing is designed to be dropped, burnt, and used over and over again. Unsurprisingly, our testers raved about how sturdy the Dexter-Russell felt. There was no wobbling of the blade as it rolled, and the connection of the blade to the handle felt solid. Whether you’re putting it to use in an industrial kitchen or your apartment, there’s no doubt you’ll be serving up pies like a pro with this tool in your arsenal.

With the Scizza Scissors, kitchen doodad company Dreamfarm takes the precision and comfort of a pair of standard scissors and makes a number of improvements to create the perfect tool to cut through Neapolitan-style and Sicilian pies alike without mashing or dragging any toppings.
Scissors may sound like a strange method to cut pizza, but as anyone who’s been to Rome will tell you, it’s how they do in Italy. Even here in the U.S., visit any of the Roman-style pizzerias that have opened across the country (we’re big fans of Bonci), and you’ll see they slice pizza with scissors to order and sell the rectangular cuts by weight.
These scissors not only require minimal effort and provide maximum comfort compared to other cutters we tested in this price range, but it’s also just plain fun to use ’em. Pizza already brings joy to our lives, but it turns out there’s a way to make eating and sharing it, even more, satisfying The Scizza has a nylon base that won’t stick to or scratch surfaces, and which also helps guide the blade under the crust for precision cutting.
Whether you’re using a hot pizza stone, a cutting board, or a delicate serving plate, fear not: The Scizza was engineered to leave any surface unscratched. The base is heat-resistant up to 400ºF, so you can slice things up right out of the oven, plus it functions as a spatula tip for serving the pie, so you won’t have to worry about burning your fingers.
Let’s talk a little more about its smart design: The Scizza’s raised handle, made of BPA-free plastic, prevents hot cheese and tomato sauce from getting all over it as you go, sparing your hands from potential burns and minimizing mess. The tool is spring-loaded, so you don’t have to strain to open the scissors as you cut, which reduces the effort necessary for a neater slice — and makes it a great option for anyone with limited hand strength.
You can also put it to use cutting up fresh herbs to sprinkle over your pie, for instance, or side dishes like homemade pasta or garlic bread, feats that would be significantly more difficult (and less joyful) with the help of a traditional pizza wheel–style cutter. Go ahead, take a minute and just picture yourself cutting up fresh basil over the piping-hot pie you just pulled out of the oven. Is there anything more dreamy? The entire unit is top-shelf dishwasher-friendly, but we also found it easy to clean by hand with warm soapy water; there aren’t many nooks or crannies, so it’s similar to cleaning regular kitchen shears.
And while customer reviewers didn’t explicitly mention rust buildup, it’s probably best to dry the scissors off completely before closing and storing them. This tool’s ability to slice through cheese and toppings with unparalleled precision, combined with its propensity to make people shriek with glee while they use it seriously, one of our testers did just that earn its status as the ultimate pizza cutter. Whether you find joy in the tactile satisfaction and nostalgia of cutting across a pie like a piece of construction paper or the look on your guests’ faces, this thing gives you yet one more reason to add pizza to the menu.

At 11-inches long, this stainless steel cutter is strong enough to separate even the densest, most topping-filled pies with no damage—but not too substantial that it won’t fit comfortably in your drawers or cabinets. The Checkered Chef Pizza Cutter is great because it simply has one long blade made of commercial-quality 18/0 stainless steel.
The blade is long enough to cut a 14-inch pizza in half with just one rocking motion. This helps you avoid dragging the toppings across the pizza, which can sometimes be a problem with wheel cutters.
A plastic sheath comes with the blade to ensure you don’t cut yourself while rummaging through a drawer. The unit is dishwasher safe, or you can easily wipe off the single blade by hand.
Epicurious recommends the Checkered Chef Pizza Cutter because it works well and looks great. The reviewer was accustomed to pizza wheels and was surprised how quickly she got the hang of this device. In her tests, it was one of only a few blades that got through the crust on the first go. And, she was impressed with how easy it is to clean the blade. However, the reviewer noted that this is a larger cutter that takes up significant space in the kitchen.
Approximately 83% of the Amazon buyers who reviewed the Checkered Chef Pizza Cutter gave it five stars. The most common comment about this model is that the blade is incredibly sharp, which allows for the quick and efficient cutting of pizza and other items. In fact, buyers report using this for quickly cutting up paninis, sandwiches, waffles, and more.
The blade guard is another popular feature since many users keep the cutter in a utensil drawer. Reviewers with arthritis also noted that they were able to use this item without a problem.
Pros: Affordable, snug-fitting safety blade guard, sharp blade for clean cuts, easy to use
Cons: Is larger than other models and may demand more drawer space

OXO has a number of excellent pizza cutters, but the Good Grips Easy to Clean Pizza Wheel and Cutter appears to be the best. Since you are pressing down against the blade instead of at an angle, this wheel gives you extra leverage to get through a variety of crusts.
The handle opens up so you can remove the blade and clean it easier — by hand or in the dishwasher. And, the blade cover and circular design allow for compact and safe storage.
MomDot recommends the OXO Good Grips Easy to Clean Pizza Wheel and Cutter because the reviewer found it to be easy to clean and use. She liked how comfy the non-slip handle was to grip. And, it came apart effortlessly for cleaning. Her only complaint was that it felt weird to use at first since she was used to the long-handled wheel cutters.
The Spruce Eats and Cooking Detective both recommend this model as the best overall pizza cutter. And, it’s the cutter that many of the staffers at The Kitchn use in their kitchens.
About 92% of the buyers who reviewed the OXO Good Grips Easy to Clean Pizza Wheel and Cutter on Amazon gave it a positive rating. There are several comments about how this model lives up to its name.
Buyers appreciate that they can just pop the blade out and put the unit in the dishwasher to clean. The safety cover is also a hit since it protects fingers as they rummage through drawers. The only consistent complaints seem to be from commenters who couldn’t seem to get the hang of using this style of a pizza cutter.

Cons: Has a little bit of a learning curve for people used to long-handled cutters

The best feature of the OXO Good Grips Pizza Wheel is its 4-inch sharp stainless steel blade designed to get through thick pizzas. As with other items in the Good Grips line, the handle is large, comfortable, and non-slip: an excellent option for people with arthritis.
Between the blade and handle is a die-cast zinc thumb guard to protect your fingers. The whole unit is dishwasher safe. OXO also offers a lifetime satisfaction guarantee. So, if you experience defects under normal use, you can get your unit repaired, replaced, or refunded.
The OXO Good Grips 4-Inch Pizza Wheel is considered the best pizza cutter by The Smart Consumer. In her tests, the reviewer found the cutter to be easy to clean, safe, comfortable in the hand, and it cut pizza evenly and precisely.
Epicurious also recommends this wheel because the reviewer liked how the hefty size led to less “hand flailing” and more control. The grip was also cushy and the cuts were precise in her tests. The Spruce Eats recommends it as the best washable pizza cutter because you can just toss it in the dishwasher. Soft grip and a sharp, effective blade were also bonuses.
More than 700 Amazon buyers have left four- or five-star reviews of the OXO Good Grips 4-Inch Pizza Wheel. Commenters seem to be most impressed with the size of the cutting wheel. It is large enough to get through Chicago deep-dish pizza.
The most helpful reviewer was fed up with other cutters losing their sharpness after three or four trips through the dishwasher. After using this model once per week for two months, she’s happy that it continues to remain sharp. Another buyer recommends holding onto the packaging cover to use as a blade protector.
Pros: Affordable, comfortable grip, hefty design for better control, dishwasher-safe, sharp blade
Cons: Doesn’t come with a good blade protector

Factors We Evaluated
Does It Effectively Cut Pizza?
We didn’t want to have to wheel back and forth over the pizza terrain, trying desperately to break ground. We also didn’t want an excessive amount of cheese and toppings stuck to the blade or caught in the crannies of the tool.
How Does It Feel In Your Hand?
Because no one should be uncomfortable when they’re cutting pizza, we looked for a tool that didn’t feel awkward in our hands and was easy to grip and maneuver over a hot pie.
How’s the Design and the Material?
A long blade, similar to a bench scraper, with a flat handle along the top to press down and rock back and forth over the pizza. Fourth, a pair of pizza-specific scissors.
Was it Easy to Clean?
As usual, we were looking for a tool that was easy to clean.
